What Does “Protestant” Mean?

The easy answer to that question would be “not Catholic or Orthodox.” However, there is an extensive history behind the word “Protestant” that is important to keep in mind.

In Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries, there were people who sought reform from within the Church (which at that time was primarily the Roman Catholic Church). These reformers were seen as against certain church practices. Though many of his ideas were influenced by earlier reformers, perhaps the best known Protestant reformer was Martin Luther, who was a priest in Germany. On October 31, 1517, Luther nailed a copy of his 95 Theses about church reform on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

Since the Protestant Reformation movement in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries, many denominations have been formed. Among them are Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Covenant, Reformed, Moravian, Baptist, and United Church of Christ.
